What my daughter taught me about compassion

What my daughter taught me about compassion

A few years ago one of my daughters had an experience that taught me about compassion and forgiveness in a way that I will always remember.Without going into all the details, I will just say that there was an incident that happened between her and another person.  She stood up to this person and, in retaliation, he said horrible things to her. He called her names in front of her peers  and tried to shame her, intimidate her, and bully her.I found out about it a couple weeks after it had happened, but while the bullying was still going on.  I will admit, my mother instinct went into freak out mode. When I talked with my daughter about it off and on for the next several days, I clearly was the one who was angry and finding excuses to hang on to that anger. Even though the whole thing was upsetting, she was calm and reassured me many times she was fine.A week or two after I found out, we were driving in the car, just the two of us. I asked her how she was doing.  She turned to me with the most amazing calmness and confidence and told me that she had been praying for the boy who had been bullying her.  She told me that she knew he had a lot of emotional issues.  She told me that she was praying that he would get the help that he needed and that he would be open to it.  She told me that she forgave him, and that I didn't need to worry - she was not traumatized.  In that moment, my own heart softened.  I saw in this amazing 16 year old what I had been working on for a long time - not to be a victim of any circumstance or of anyone's words or actions.  I saw the true meaning of compassion and forgiveness in action.  In that moment, I truly learned that we all have a choice when we are faced with challenges, even when we have been wronged.  She chose not to be damaged by someone else's actions and words.  She chose compassion and forgiveness.  She chose the higher road - the road of love, the road that leads to all healing.Choose love.  Choose to be compassionate with yourself and others.  Choose forgiveness.  Forgive yourself and others.
