Muscle memory, piano, and happiness

Muscle memory, piano, and happiness

Years ago, I took piano lessons.  I would get up every morning at 5:30 am and practice on one of the two pianos we had in our home.  Another sibling would be practicing on the other.  I wish I could say I did it on my own because I loved it so much, but that was just not true.  I was never concert pianist material because I just didn't love it enough.  The truth is, I practiced enough to get by so that I wouldn't be too terribly embarrassed at my lessons, or so that I could earn privileges such as going to a friend's house to play,I practiced enough over the years that I was able to play church hymns while I was a missionary in Spain.  In fact, in many of the little congregations I attended, there was no one who could play piano.  I was grateful for my ability to share music with so many people there.I have played for different church meetings over the years and I have been grateful for the opportunity to keep up some practicing.  It's been awhile since I have had a specific event to play for, but I once the Christmas season came, I decided I would open up my music books and play some of the Christmas songs I used to play often.  I was a little surprised by how rusty I was with songs I had once been able to play with ease!  I decided I would take a few minutes every morning as part of my daily morning routine of prayer, scripture, exercise, and reading, to practice my Christmas favorites.  Every morning got easier. The muscle memory between my brain and fingers started to wake up and reassure me that all of those hours of practicing were not wasted.  It grew to be a joyful part of my morning routine.  The first morning was rough, I'm not going to lie, but I just kept with it.  I slowed down and played sections over and over until the notes came together beautifully. This experience reminded me of my clients when we are working on creating new brain patterns of loving, forgiving, letting go and being open to all the abundant possibilities.  I give them powerful tools that they get to practice.  We talk a lot about slowing down, taking a breath, and then practicing a new thought, a new reaction, or a new perception.  Muscle memory is powerful.  All of that past practicing was stored in my memory. I even remembered the sections that were difficult and found myself playing the same wrong notes until I slowed down, took it one note at a time, and changed the pattern. Our emotional muscle memory is similar.  We get in certain situations that trigger us, and what happens?  We revert to the old patterns of blame, anger, stomping off, ignoring, making excuses, procrastinating, passing judgement, and being critical.  Often these are all turned inward, which has its own consequences of depression, anxiety, fear and even health issues. The great news is that emotional muscle memory can change with practice. It can change to positive self talk, love, compassion, forgiveness, creativity, fun, excitement for life, confidence, mental and emotional clarity, productivity, success, courage, and much much more!Slow down for just a minute and think about how you are experiencing life.  How do you react when things aren't going as planned or when someone says or does something hurtful?  Are you feeling connected in your relationships and fulfilled with life in general?Take a minute to write down what is going right and what you are struggling with right now.If you realize that some things have not been going right for quite a long time, then in this minute you have a choice.  Leave the excuses behind, and just decide if it's time to make a change.  Your willpower will only get you so far. Self-help books are amazing - they bring up all of your emotional junk, give you an overwhelming amount of steps to take to make your life better, and if you are anything like me, you leave feeling more stuck, with more things in front of you to "work on."  Here's another option:  work with my team.  We specialize in guiding you to transform that old negative brain muscle memory to new positive brain muscle memory.  Are you ready to let go of all the old negative beliefs about yourself, the world, money, relationships, happiness, and more, that are stuck in your brain's muscle memory from past experiences?  Slow down and take a breath.  Think about this: what would your life be like if you could actually change the old patterns and turn them into something new with a little daily practice? My team and I are here to support you when you are ready!  We have lots of options.  Request a call and find out if what we have to offer you is a good fit.Now...back to my practicing!
